What is Lafora Disease?
Lafora Disease is an incredibly rare, progressive form of epilepsy that primarily affects children and young adults. It is caused by the accumulation of abnormal carbohydrates, known as polyglucosan bodies, in the cells of the brain and other organs. This leads to severe seizures, cognitive decline, and ultimately, premature death. Currently, there is no cure for Lafora Disease, and treatment options are limited to managing symptoms.
